Globular clusters within 5 ◦ of the Galactic center ?

چکیده
In the recent years we have concentrated efforts to collect Colour-Magnitude Diagrams of the globular clusters projected in the central parts of the Galaxy. So far we were able to gather photometric data in the V, I and Gunn z bandpasses, for 16 out of the 17 known clusters in the central 5◦ radius, most of them severely reddened. Reddening, distance and metallicity are estimated from the horizontal and red giant branches. We study the resulting cluster spatial distribution and conclude that essentially no cluster is detected beyond the Galactic Center distance. The results favour a flattened bulge extending from the Galactic Center to 4.5 kpc from the Sun. The density distribution of the clusters follows the current models for bulge field stars. We estimate that missing clusters on the opposite side of the Galaxy bulge may amount ∼ 15 clusters similar to those detected on our side. The projected distribution of clusters is asymmetrical, with higher absorption in the southern Galactic hemisphere. The metallicity distribution of our sample clusters results similar to that of bulge field stars. The present ground-based results coupled to main sequence data of two genuine bulge clusters using the Hubble Space Telescope, point to a scenario of an old flat bulge with common origin for the stellar populations in both globular clusters and field.

Faint X-ray Sources in the Globular Cluster Terzan 5
We report our analysis of a Chandra X-ray observation of the rich globular cluster Terzan 5, in which we detect 50 sources to a limiting 1.0-6 keV X-ray luminosity of 3 × 10 ergs s within the half-mass radius of the cluster. Thirty-three of these have LX > 10 32 ergs s, the largest number yet seen in any globular cluster. In addition to the quiescent low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB, identified by W...
متن کاملM ar 2 00 7 Gas Accretion by Globular Clusters and Nucleated
We consider here the collective accretion of gas by globular clusters and dwarf galaxies moving through the interstellar medium. In the limit of high velocity and/or sound speed of the ISM, the collective potential of the cluster is insufficient to accrete significant amounts of gas, and stars within the systems accrete gas individually. We show, however, that when the sound speed or the relati...
متن کاملSubstructure in the Globular Cluster System of the Milky Way: The Highest-Metallicity Clusters
An analysis of the kinematical and spatial properties of the highestmetallicity globular clusters in the Galaxy, having metallicities of [Fe/H] > −0.8, indicates that these objects do not comprise a homogeneous population. Three subsystems are identified among these clusters. i) The highest-mass clusters with log(M/M⊙) > 5.5 exhibit a very slow net rotation with a speed of vrot = 24± 23 km/s an...

We study the evolution and observability of young, compact star clusters near the Galactic center, such as the Arches and Quintuplet systems. The clusters are modeled by integrating the equations of motion of all stars while accounting for the internal evolution of the stars and binaries and the effect of the tidal field of the Galaxy. We find that clusters within 150pc of the Galactic center d...
